Looking Back at the Mohamed Makiya Prize for Architecture 2020

Tamayouz Excellence Award recently announced the shortlist of finalists for the Mohamed Makiya Prize for Architecture 2020, also known as the Middle Eastern Architectural Personality of the Year. The award is given to individuals and organizations who have promoted, encouraged, campaigned, or influenced the advancement of architecture and the built environment in the Middle East between 2017 and 2020.

The annual prize is part of the Tamayouz Excellence Award program that champions the best of architecture in the Middle East, North Africa, and beyond. It is named after the prolific Iraqi architect Dr. Mohamed Saleh Makiya. The shortlist consists of 12 submissions representing countries all over the world, including Iraq, Egypt, Syria, the UK, Iran, and others.

One of the finalists for the 2020 prize was Mazen Alali, an architect, author, and multidisciplinary designer based in Amman, Jordan. Alali has contributed to and documented Jordan's built environment through various projects, including the "Black Iris Project," which documented 100 projects across Jordan with their plans, sections, elevations, and project descriptions.

Alali also worked on the AMMAN architectural map version 2, a 3D model of the city of Amman, and a publication titled "Jordan's Pathfinder," an architectural encyclopedia of Jordan. In addition to his productions, Alali has also worked as an instructor for the AA Visiting School in Jordan and as an instructor at Fab Academy.

The Mohamed Makiya Prize for Architecture celebrates the outstanding achievements of individuals and organizations who strive to promote and influence the advancement of architecture and enrich the cultural heritage of the region. The focus of the prize is to create visibility for individuals, organizations, and initiatives, and to stimulate debate about the value of these contributions among professionals and decision-makers in urban planning and design. Tamayouz Excellence Award continues to champion the best of architecture in the Middle East and beyond, promoting excellence and inspiring innovation in the field.
